Granite, Marble, Silestone or Corian?

There are many natural and processed materials used in architecture, construction, and especially in the interior design of our environments. Today we have brought this matter to you on this subject.

Natural materials: granite and marble;

industrial materials: silestone and corian.

First we talk about granite. This popular material is a natural rock, consisting of three different minerals: (mica, feldspar and quartz). It’s hard, less porous, absorbs little water and is very resistant to chemical attacks. Therefore, internal, external sites and exposed to human action – great movement of persons – use of chemicals, kitchen sink counters and service areas, granite can be a good option. Its price varies depending on the rarity of the color of the stone.

Unlike granite, marble is a natural metamorphic rock, being mainly composed of calcite minerals. It is softer, more porous and less resistant than granite. It is more susceptible to stains, breaks, scratches and acid solutions. Thus, the marble is more suitable and used in internal and dry environments, it suffers from pollution. It should be avoided in kitchens, as it absorbs fat. Its price is higher than granite.

Both the granite and the marble, are considered natural products. Its visual aspects are very similar, but their physical characteristics are very different. Both are used in interior desig, available in different colors, shapes and sizes.

Now, we are talking about the industrialized materials.

Silestone is an artificial material composed of 95% quartz, and 5% polyester resin. His infinite range of colors gives the mixture of pigments and binders. This material is quite resistant to scratches, scrapes, bumps, deformations caused by heat or accidents with chemicals and stains. The silestone has been considering the future granite.

Now corian is a synthetic material designed to imitate marble. Easily molded, resistant to damage and stains, its color range is around 80 tons, thus being limited. 100% made of plastics, can be damaged by hot pans or sharp knives. However, they are easier to be repaired than silestone.
